Three women aged 22, 24, and 40 years took bromocriptine 2.5 mg bd for 2-5 days postpartum and complained of headache two lost consciousness (8). The most common adverse effects of bromocriptine therapy include central nervous system symptoms such as headache, lightheadedness, dizziness, nervousness, and fatigue. Gastrointestinal effects such as nausea, abdominal pain, or diarrhea also are very common. Some patients may need to take bromocriptine with food to decrease the incidence of adverse gastrointestinal effects. Most adverse effects are seen early in the course of therapy and tend to decrease with continued treatment. Bromocriptine may cause thickening of bronchial secretions and nasal congestion. A healthy postpartum woman taking bromocriptine developed very severe headache and marked hypertension after also taking phenylpropanolamine. Similarly another woman developed seizures with cerebral vasospasm, and a third developed a severe headache, hypertension and severe cardiac dysfunction after also taking isometheptene. A 32-year-old woman took two 5-mg doses of bromocriptine for milk suppression without any adverse effects following the birth of a child. She was given 5 mg of intramuscular morphine and her blood pressure became normal within 24 hours.
