Headache bromocriptine

Three women aged 22, 24, and 40 years took bromocriptine 2.5 mg bd for 2-5 days postpartum and complained of headache two lost consciousness (8). One subsequently died and another had a residual neurological deficit. In all three cases intracerebral hemorrhage, confirmed by CT or MRI scans, occurred on the sixth day of administration. Maximal recorded blood pressures were 200/100, 173/120, and 180/ 118 mmHg. 

The most common adverse effects of bromocriptine therapy include central nervous system symptoms such as headache, lightheadedness, dizziness, nervousness, and fatigue. Gastrointestinal effects such as nausea, abdominal pain, or diarrhea also are very common. Some patients may need to take bromocriptine with food to decrease the incidence of adverse gastrointestinal effects. Most adverse effects are seen early in the course of therapy and tend to decrease with continued treatment. Bromocriptine may cause thickening of bronchial secretions and nasal congestion. There have been rare cases of psychiatric disturbances, pleural diseases, and an erythromeMgic syndrome... 

A healthy postpartum woman taking bromocriptine developed very severe headache and marked hypertension after also taking phenylpropanolamine. Similarly another woman developed seizures with cerebral vasospasm, and a third developed a severe headache, hypertension and severe cardiac dysfunction after also taking isometheptene. A further patient taking bromocriptine developed psychosis when pseudoephedrine was added. 

Two healthy women who had given birth 3 to 4 days previously, developed severe headaches while taking bromocriptine 2.5 mg twice daily for... 

A 32-year-old woman took two 5-mg doses of bromocriptine for milk suppression without any adverse effects following the birth of a child. Within 2 hours of taking a third dose with phenylpropanolamine 50 mg she awoke with a very severe headache and was found to have a blood pressure of 240/140 mmHg. She was given 5 mg of intramuscular morphine and her blood pressure became normal within 24 hours. Another 5-mg dose of bromocriptine taken 48 hours after the original dose of phenylpropanolamine had the same effect, but the blood pressure rise was less severe (160/120 mmHg). ...

Of 14 patients taking bromocriptine 5 mg daily for benign prostatic enlargement 4 had to stop treatment 3 developed nausea, lethargy, headache and unsteadiness and one had a hypotensive episode after the first dose (30 =).
