In the Rotterdam harbour area, both fluvial and marine sediments are deposited. In the most easterly habours the percentage of marine mud is low whereas in the westerly harbours (Europoort) up to 90% of the mud may be derived from the North Sea. This decrease in the amount of fluvial, contaminated material is reflected in decreasing heavy metals in the seaward direction. From these compositional and geographical differences 4 classes of dredged materials are distinguished, for which different disposal options are being applied (Nijssen, 1988).
