Haines studies

Movements of liquid water within porous solids have been experimentally observed. Haines studied the movement of liquid water within porous media during drying [26, 27]. He observed rapid movements of water elements in the porous system (Haines jumps). The capillary pressure transports water to narrow pores at the surface. Larger volumes surrounded by narrow pores can be rapidly emptied, and smaller volumes can be filled when the water is removed out of the narrow... [Pg.347]

The capacity of cyclic ligands to stabilize less-common oxidation states of a coordinated metal ion has been well-documented. For example, both the high-spin and low-spin Ni(n) complexes of cyclam are oxidized more readily to Ni(m) species than are corresponding open-chain complexes. Chemical, electrochemical, pulse radiolysis and flash photolysis techniques have all been used to effect redox changes in particular complexes (Haines McAuley, 1982) however the major emphasis has been given to electrochemical studies. [Pg.210]

On the other hand, Haines and Alexander reported that they isolated a soil bacterium identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa which was capable of growing on and degrading PEG compounds ranging from monomer to PEG 20,000 ( ). However, the original strain was lost. Hosoya et al. also found that two bacterial strains assimilated PEG 6000 (9). No further studies of this type have been noted by these authors to date. [Pg.113]

The effect of soil temperature on tension was studied by Richards et al (1937), who showed the tension to be inversely related to the temperature. A drop of approximately 2Q deg C caused a tension increase of 10 cm Hg. The full significance of tensiometer measurements has yet to be revealed. Haines (1927) pointed out the serious limitations of such measurements since they give no indication as to whether the moisture is on the rising or falling capillarity cycles. A variety of techniques including specific deuteration, selective proton decoupling, and lanthanide shift reagents (LSR), Pr(dpm)3, was used by Haines et al. (138) to assign completely the H and Si NMR spectra of methyl-2,3,4,6-tetra-O-trimethylsilyl-oc-D-glucopyranoside. This paper also presents the first LSR study in Si NMR. It shows that the magnitudes of the LSR induced shifts in the spectra are of the same order as those found for the Si resonances. (138)... [Pg.271]

The remarkable ease with which poly(dimethylsiloxane) enters into ring-chain equilibration reactions prompted the investigations described in this section, as well as those outlined in Section IIL(C). Both investigations were concerned with the question as to whether it is possible to study the statistical conformations of chain polymers by the equilibrium cyclic concentration method, if the polymer itself cannot undei o ring-chain equilibration reactions. The polymers chosen for study were n-paraffinic and polystyrene chains. In each case, dimethylsiloxane linkages were incorporated into the molecules and ring[Pg.56]

To study the polymer structural effects on PAP, including the size of the chromophore and the mode of connection of the chromophore to the main chain, SHG-PAP studies have been performed both on a true side hain polyimide system in which the chromophore is attached to the polymer backbone via flexible tedier (PI-3a in Figure 8.4 Tg = 228 C), and on donor-embedded polyimide syst s (PI-1 and PI-2 in Figure 8.4 Tg = 350 and 252°C, r pectively), in which the azo chromophore is incorporated into the polymer backbone through the donor substituent without any flexible connector or tether. Details of SHG-PAP can be found in reference 14. In both the side-chain and the donor-embedded polyimides, polar order can be generated by thermal poling... [Pg.276]
