Trichocethecens possess a range of toxic effects. The acute trichocethecen toxicity manifests as intestine disorders (vomiting, temperature, diarrhoea etc.). There are also haematological effects such as anemia and reduction of the number of leucocytes. These toxins suppress the synthesis of proteins in the organism. 

Lead is considered to be a toxic element as a consequence of a variety of biochemical effects. Among these are included neurological problems, haematological effects, renal dysfunction, hypertension and cancer (the lARC has classified Pb as a carcinogen), for which there is evidence in animals but not yet in humans. The latter study, also involving humans, however suggested that the increases in lead uptake have occurred when dietary Fe was low. 

The haematological effects of azathioprine and mercaptopurine are markedly increased by allopurinol. 

Cyclohexane. Cyclohexane (OES 100 ppm 8h TWA) shows similar generic toxicity, and there is some evidence for slight liver and kidney effects at high exposure levels. It has been used as a substitute for benzene, there being no evidence either for the haematological effects shown by benzene or for the neurological effects shown by w-hexane. 

Vitamin B12 deficiency is associated with neurological and haematological symptoms and signs. It is important to detect and treat patients with vitamin Bi2 deficiency, especially before therapy with folic acid, as this may mask the haematological effects of vitamin B12 deficiency.
