If the articles subjected to these processes are of such a nature that they would be damaged by the acid vapors formed during the operation, the patentees state that carbonate of soda should be mixed with the solution of gutta-percha, in quantity sufficient to neutralize the acid formed. [Pg.362]

The second part of the claim, which has for its object the removal of the odor of articles fabricated of india-rubber or gutta-percha in which solvents have been used, consists in subjecting the waterproof cloths, whether before or after being made up into garments or... [Pg.363]

Polymers with unsaturated carbon chain backbone form another important class of macromolecules, many of the compounds from this class having properties of elastomers. The most common polymers from this class are obtained from 1,3-butadiene, 2-methyl-1,3-butadiene (isoprene) and their derivatives. Natural rubber, which is poly(c/s-isoprene), as well as the natural polymers gutta-percha and balata also have an unsaturated carbon chain backbone. For many practical applications, the polymers from this class are subject to a process known as vulcanization, which consists of a reaction with sulfur or S2CI2, and leads to the formation of bridges between the molecular chains of the polymer. This process significantly improves certain physical properties of practical interest. A separate subclass of polymers with unsaturated carbon chain backbone is formed by polyacetylene. [Pg.18]

Although names and properties of thousands of hydrocarbons and their variously oxidized and rearranged derivatives have been compiled and catalogued (variously complete catalogues that are incomplete when published), the exact number of terpenes (Cio), sesquiterpenes (C15), diterpenes (C20), sesterpenes (C25), triterpenes (C30), carotenoids (C40), and varieties of rubber (e.g., laytex and gutta-percha) is unknown. Similarly, tomes have been written on the subject, and the discussion of these compounds here will end with an introduction to the triterpenes because these serve as sources of steroids (animal) and sterols (plants). [Pg.1103]

It was known that caoutchouc and gutta-percha (another purified tree sap) had the same empirical formula. When gutta-percha was subjected to the same force applied to the caoutchouc, it did not deform as much, and it cooled, as expected What was so different about these two otherwise chemically identical substances Crystallinity The crystal deformed as an elastic body and the sample returned to the same temperature upon release of the force. Joule subjected caoutchouc to a cooling-bath at 0° Fahrenheit for a few days. The sample then became rigid and showed the same elasticity as the gutta-percha. Joule worked like Faraday he tried everything ... [Pg.16]
