Gulf Cooperation Council consists of six countries Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) (Fig. 47.1). Saudi Arabia was the prime actor in setting up the Gulf Corporation Council (GCC) in 1981. A GCC common market was instigated on 1 January 2008. The population of the region is about 3.8 million who live on 2.66 sq km (1 million mi ) of land. 31% of the Gulfs total population and 65% of the workforce consist of expatriates.
