Over 50 acidic, basic, and neutral aluminum sulfate hydrates have been reported. Only a few of these are well characterized because the exact compositions depend on conditions of precipitation from solution. Variables such as supersaturation, nucleation and crystal growth rates, occlusion, nonequilihrium conditions, and hydrolysis can each play a role ia the final composition. Commercial dry alum is likely not a single crystalline hydrate, but rather it contains significant amounts of amorphous material. [Pg.174]

The levels of anabolites and catabolites in fish are closely connected with the ambient temperature. Protein synthesis (Ray and Medda, 1975 Haschemeyer et al., 1979 Haschemeyer, 1980 Berezhnaya et al., 1981 Saez et al, 1982) and growth rate associated with protein synthesis (Ryzkov, 1976) proceed more intensively at higher temperatures. Lipids As the capacity of the stomach of newborns is very limited, lipids and fat are necessary to provide the large amounts of energy required by the newborn s high body growth rate. Milk fat is the major source of lipid that mammalian newborns use for accumulating body adipose tissue and for the development of their nervous system. The major lipids in milk fat are triglycerides, which represent more than 98 percent of the neutral lipids. From a quantitative point of view, there is no difference in the fat content in cow s (3.8 percent) and human milk (3.7 percent), but they do differ in their qualitative composition in fact, in cow s milk the predominant fatty acids are saturated acids, while polyunsaturated acids are the main fatty acids in human milk, as shown in Table 13.3. [Pg.403]

When supersaturation of a crystallizing compound is created by its formation by chemical reaction, the operation is characterized as reactive crystallization. The reaction may be between two complex organic compounds or can be neutralization by an acid or base to form a salt of a complex compound. These reactions can be very fast compared to both the mass transfer rates to the crystals, and the growth rate of the crystals, thereby leading to high local supersaturation and nucleation.
