Growth rate affecting secondary

The high sugar content of the juice dramatically reduces the growth, fermentation rate, and survival of yeasts (Dittrich, 1977 Lafon-Lafourcade, 1983) and also affects secondary metabolism. Acetic acid... [Pg.179]

Factors Affecting Secondary Nucleation. The rate of secondary nucleation is governed by three processes (1) the generation of secondary nuclei on or near a solid phase (2) removal of the clusters and (3) growth to form a new solid phase. Several factors... [Pg.47]

Secondary or contact nucleation, which is the most effective method of nucleation. occurs when crystals collide with each other, with the impellors in mixing, or with the walls of the pipe or container. This type of nucleation is, of course, affected by the intensity of agitation. It occurs at low supersaturation, where the crystal growth rate is at the optimum for good crystals. This type of contact nucleation has been isolated and demonstrated experimentally. It is the most effective and common method of nucleation in magma crystallization. The precise mechanisms of contact nucleation are not known, nor is a complete theory available to predict these rates. [Pg.744]

Premature infants, especially those with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) who are incapable of full oral feeds, often receive TPN because of their extremely limited substrate reserve, very rapid growth rate, and perceived susceptibility to irreversible brain damage secondary to malnutrition. In addition, during the newborn period and first months of life, TPN is used in infants with intractable diarrhea and in those undergoing gastrointestinal surgery. The following section contains a brief review of these disease entities and of methods used to determine how and whether TPN affects their outcome. [Pg.253]
