Terephthalic acid (TA) (diacid) is now the major monomer used in the production of PET. It is produced on a world-wide scale and is available in a number of purities. These can be generally referred to as PTA (pure TA), MTA (medium purity TA) or CTA (cmde TA). These descriptions are subjective and used in different ways by manufacturers. The purity of TA is the self-limiting process in PET manufacture. The major impurity in any TA grade is 4-carboxybenzaldehyde and it is a chain growth inhibitor. As the level of impurity increases less reaction can take place. From a food contact point of view the purity or impurities in the TA is important. Both US and EU law state that monomers should be of good technical quality but do not define what that technical quality should be. If no other information is available the... [Pg.434]

Inhibition of RNA Synthesis usually has bacteriostatic consequences since it does not result in severely unbalanced biosynthesis and growth. When RNA biosynthesis is turned off by an inhibitor, the cell cannot replenish messenger RNA which, in microorganisms, is subject to rapid turnover. The progressive deficiency in messenger RNA results in a progressive decay in the rate of protein biosynthesis. [Pg.9]

Another class of potent and selective influenza virus sialidase inhibitors which are orally active against influenza A and B, based on a cyclopentane framework, have also been described [54], Although not yet commercially available, BCX-1812 (RWJ-270201,5) has been subjected to Phase III clinical trials. BCX-1812 (5) is a nanomolar inhibitor of both influenza virus A and B sialidase and inhibits growth of influenza virus in tissue culture [55] and has demonstrated efficacy in a mouse influenza model... [Pg.733]
