Growth and Survival of CD4 T Cell Subsets

As well as regulating the differentiation of 004 T cells, some cytokines can inhibit the proliferation and cytotoxic capability of ThI and Th2 cells (Sher et al., 1992). Th2 but not ThI cells express IL-1/3 receptors and can accept IL-lj8 as a second signal for clonal expansion (Greenbaum aol., 1988 Lichtman etal., 1988 Munoz etal., 1990a). TGF/3 is reported to inhibit the growth of 

Williams etal., 1990) and CDS T cell clones (Otten and Germain, 1991). Indeed, faced with an anergic stimulus ThO clones are repotted to lose the capacity to respond to IL-2 and to exhibit a Tn2-like cytokine profile (Jenkins etal., 1990). The resistance ofTH2 cells to IL-2-induced anetgy may explain their participation in long-lived IgE antibody responses.
