Group 12 structural studies

Several groups have studied the structure of chiral phases illustrated in Fig. IV-15 [167,168]. These shapes can be understood in terms of an anisotropic line tension arising from the molecular symmetry. The addition of small amounts of cholesterol reduces X and produces thinner domains. Several studies have sought an understanding of the influence of cholesterol on lipid domain shapes [168,196]. 

The field emission microscope (FEM), invented in 1936 by Muller [59, 60], has provided major advances in the structural study of surfaces. The subject is highly developed and has been reviewed by several groups [2, 61, 62], and only a selective, introductory presentation is given here. Some aspects related to chemisorption are discussed in Chapter XVII.

During these structural studies by chemical methods, we found the following interesting reactions, which were substantially useful for the presence of an unique amidine group. 

As each functional group is discussed in future chapters, the spectroscopic properties of that group will be described. For the present, we ll point out some distinguishing features of the hydrocarbon functional groups already studied and briefly preview some other common functional groups. We should also point out, however, that in addition to interpreting absorptions that ore present in an IR spectrum, it s also possible to get structural information by noticing which absorptions are not present. If the spectrum of a compound has no absorptions at 3300 and 2150 cm-1, the compound is not a terminal alkyne if the spectrum has no absorption near 3400 cm -, the compound Is not an alcohol and so on. 

As already mentioned, the macrocyclic ring can be further enhanced if the propylene moiety is substituted by a butylene group. Visible spectral data of a series of related compounds [Cu(L BF2)D]X 132 and the structural study of the derivative with D = H2O show that the seven-membered chelate ring influences the structure and other properties like electronic absorption of the copper(II) complex [193].
