Gregory

Gregory I, known as the Great, was born in Rome of a patrician family, He revealed so much ability in the exercise of the office of senator that the Emperor Justinian the Younger made him prefect of Rome. He gave up this dignity when he found it was too worldly, and retired to a monastery [(A)] under the discipline of [Pg.64]

This was about the year 537, according to Abbfe L.-J. Leclerc. [The foregoing note was inserted by the editor of the edition of 1820-4. Abbfe Leclerc was editor of the Dictionnaire s edition of Trevoux, 1734 ] [Pg.64]

That is to say one of the seven archdeacons of Rome, according to Leclerc who adds that, according to Flenri, it was [Pope] Benedict 1 who conferred that dignity upon him. [Pg.65]
