The opposite sequence, reduction of nitrate and nitrite ions, provides a major route of acquisition of ammonia for incorporation into cells by bacteria, fungi, and green plants (Fig. 24-1). Organic residues added to the soil contain about 50% carbon which is eventually converted to carbon dioxide. Soil microorganisms are responsible for the evolution of about 95% of the gas which is then fixed mainly by green plants. A simplified representation of the carbon cycle is given in Fig. 4.8.
