By mid-April Szilard had managed to borrow about five hundred pounds of black, grimy uranium oxide free of charge from the Eldorado Radium Corporation, an organization owned by the Russian-born Pregel brothers, Boris and Alexander. Boris had studied at the Radium Institute in Paris Eldorado speculated in rare minerals and owned important uranium deposits at Great Bear Lake in the Northwest Territories of Canada. [Pg.298]

Gilbert LaBitie (Ufr) was prospecting for gold around Great Bear Lake in the Northwest Territories in 1930 when he discovered pitchblende, a source of uranium. [Pg.9]

The Canadian government suddenly became aware of this attention. Early in 1942, C.D. Howe, Minister of Munitions and Supply, summoned Gilbert LaBine to Ottawa. Howes influence within the government and across the country was such that some observers called him minister of everything. In his usual direct manner, Howe told LaBine that he was to get the Great Bear Lake mine back into operation Ottawa would help as much as it could. Meanwhile, the government, prompted by Britain, initiated a behind-the-scenes takeover of Eldorado. Under Howe s direction, it quietly acquired a substantial number of shares and eventually went public to expropriate the rest. [Pg.11]

Lead isotopic composition of the main sediment types (for a compilation see Appendix C) is more a function of age of source areas for the sediment than of rock type because the source rocks contain significant quantities of U and Th relative to lead (Fig. 17). Young sediments in restricted basins draining Precambrian terranes, such as Hudson Bay, Great Slave Lake, Great Bear Lake, Lake Superior, and the Baltic Sea (Chow, 1965 Hart and Tilton, 1966), tend to be highly radiogenic and variable in lead isotope ratios. [Pg.55]
