Gray fox

Numbers of visits to scent stations baited with fatty acid tablets or prey odor such as shellfish oil allows estimation of population sizes of free-living red and gray foxes, raccoons, striped skunks, river otter, bobcats, cottontail rabbits, and oppossums. However, Smith et al. (1994) showed that the numbers of raccoon visits to scent stations did not reflect the size of their population.

Probably the most famous fictional account of the gray goo problem has been Michael Crichton s 2002 novel Prey. In his book, Crichton tells of the escape of nanobots (replicators) into the surrounding environment from a research facility in the desert of Nevada. The nanobots then begin to replicate by attacking humans and other animals to extract the raw materials they need for their own reproduction. Crichton s hook was on the New York Times bestseller list for months, and in 2002 Twentieth-Century Fox purchased him rights to the story. 

Sally Fox is an unlikely player in the cotton business, an industry dominated by male farmers, who increasingly plant GE cotton. You can see this in her appearance (loose cotton dress, bright blue eyes, friendly smile, unreserved enthusiasm, and graying hair) and in the crop that she grows—certified organic colored cotton. 

In the northeastern woodlands of North America coyotes (and originally wolves), gray and red foxes, mustelids, and nowadays feral dogs and cats are the major predatory mammals. (Other important predators such as great homed owls, or hawks, are not considered here, for obvious reasons). Ground-dwelling small... 

As a variation of the experiment described above, one of our course participants chose to present free-ranging gray squirrels with urine of red fox, raccoon (Procyon lotor), humans, and - as control - white-tailed deer Odocoileus virginianus) (Resell 2001).
