From the definition of specific speed (eqs. 9 and 10), it follows that reciprocating pumps operate at high pressures and low flow rates. Conversely, centrifugal pumps are appHed at lower pressures and higher flow rates. Many rotary pumps are selected for viscous Hquids having pressures equal to or less than, and capacities lower than, centrifugal pumps. However, these limits are relative and a gray area exists as some pump types cross boundaries into the domain of other types. [Pg.297]

On a practical basis, if we wish to set up this system, we would assemble a set of "color-chips". Each color-chip would be specified by two factors, H = hue, and V/C, which is value (grayness) modified by chroma (saturation). The actual number of layers in the Munsell Color Tree was determined by "minimum perceptual difference". That is, the minimum change that produces a visual perceptible difference. This arrangement specifies all light colors as well cis the dark ones. To use such a system, one would choose the color-chip closest to the hue and saturation of the test color and thus obtain values for H and V/C. However, it was soon discovered that the system was not perfect. Reasons for this include the facts that the hues defined by Munsell are not those of the primaries of the human eye. Furthermore, Munsell was somewhat subjective in his definitions of hues. [Pg.434]

Navard and Haudin studied the thermal behavior of HPC mesophases (87.88) as did Werbowyj and Gray (2), Seurin et al. (Sp and, as noted above, Conio et al. (43). In summary, HjPC in H2O exhibits a unique phase behavior characterized by reversible transitions at constant temperatures above 40 C and at constant compositions when the HPC concentration is above ca. 40%. A definitive paper has been recently published by Fortin and Charlet ( who studied the phase-separation temperatures for aqueous solutions of HPC using carefully fractionated HPC samples. They showed the polymer-solvent interaction differs in tiie cholesteric phase (ordered molecular arrangement) from that in the isotropic phase (random molecular arrangement). [Pg.265]

Bismuth(III) oxide, Bi O is the compound produced by heating the metal, or its carbonate, in air.
