Gray acetate

Acetyl chlotide was formerly manufactured by the action of thionyl chlotide [7719-09-7], CI2OS, on gray acetate of lime, but this route has been largely supplanted by the reaction of sodium acetate or acetic acid and phosphoms ttichlotide [7719-12-2] (24). A similar route apparently is stiU being used in the Soviet Union (25). Both pathways ate inherently costly.

Derivation Action of pyroligneous acid on calcium hydroxide the solution, on being filtered and evaporated to dryness, yields gray acetate of lime. 

The salt obtained by evaporating the solution to dryness is called gray acetate of lime. Commercial acetic acid is obtained from the calcium acetate so prepared by distilling with concentrated hydrochloric acid in copper stills. The acid is a slightly-colored liquid which contains about 50 per cent of acetic acid. It may be further purified by redistilling over a little potassium bichromate, which oxidizes some of the impurities, and by filtering through charcoal.
