MATLAB Graphical User Interface Design Environment (GUIDES... 

This chapter is intended for advanced users (i.e., developers) to demonstrate the advantage of using the MATLAB built-in Graphical User Interface Design Environment (GUIDE) as a tool to create a code working behind a friendly Graphic User Interface (GUI). 

The Graphical User Interface Design Environment (GUIDE) refers to the platform that allows the creation of icons, buttons, and so on that are visually presented to a user as the front end of a software application. A software application that accepts only keyboard-entered commands is considered to be quite outdated and primitive. We prefer to point our mouse pointer to a graphical representation of some aspect of the application, click on it (invoking some event), and continue working with the application through interactive and successive prompts. We are also accustomed to windows, pull-down menus, slider controls, and check boxes. 

FLOSHEET is part of a suite of programs called PROCEDE which has been developed for the efficient handling of all the information needed in process design. It aims to cover the complete process environment, using graphical user interfaces to facilitate the transfer of information, Preece et al. (1991). The equipment specification sheets given in Appendix G are from the PROCEDE package. 

PCAD encompasses several modules a graphical user interface (GUI), an aircraft configuration scheme selection decision-making tool, surface coordinate points generator ( control points grid ), customized CAD software adapted to the needs of designers and a commercial PDM tool and is fully embedded in CATIA/ Enovia environment by using CATIA V5 CAA interfaces (Fig. 14.10). 

A Matlab program with graphical user interface has been developed for the simulation of binary and ternary polymer systems. The users can easily edit the material properties and environment variables in the program, and the results are saved as images and data files in a designated folder. Analysis tools are also implemented in the Matlab program [74]. 

For analyzing the potential impact of a conceptual design we make use of the package WAR (Waste Reduction Algorithm) developed by the Environment Protection Agency in the USA [23]. The graphical interface allows the user to enter information for different alternatives, or to import it from a process simulator.
