Bagchi et al. (1997) studied the oxygen free-radical scavenger ability of grape seed proanthocyanidins using a chemiluminescence assay and cytochrome c reduction. The results revealed that on a weight basis (100 mg/L), the grape seed proantho-cyanidin extract was a better inhibitor of both superoxide anion and hydroxyl radical than vitamin C and vitamin E succinate. 

STE, 1.6-, 2.0-, and 2.7-fold increases in snperoxide anion prodnction were observed. Preincubation of the cells with vitamin C (75pM), vitamin E (75pW), a combination of vitamins C plus E (75 pA/ each), and grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE) (lOOpg/ml) for 4h decreased STE (300pg/ml)-induced cytochrome c reduction by 37, 39, 44, and 48%, respectively, as compared with the STE-trcated cells. ...
