Granulating machine

Col Congreve introduced his granulating machine for BkPdr which is described on p 82.

For a stable process after reaching the production cycle there is no alternation in any of the process parameters in a certain range as all parts of the machine are running at the same time. A separation in several production steps like in known granulation machines is not given. This makes it very easy to detect deviations during production. 

Granulation and pelleting of plastics are realized in special machines. Granulation machines are extruders (mainly twin-screw types), kneaders, etc., equipped with a die-face cutter. The advantages of granules are the following ... 

Typically, dry potassium nitrate is pulverized in a ball mill. Sulfur is milled into cellular charcoal to form a uniform mix in a separate ball mill. The nitrate and the sulfur—charcoal mix are screened and then loosely mixed by hand or in a tumbling machine. Magnetic separators may be used to ensure the absence of ferrous metals. The preliminary mix is transferred to an edge-mimer wheel mill with large, heavy cast iron wheels. A clearance between the pan and the wheels is required for safety purposes. The size of this gap also contributes to the density of the black powder granules obtained. Water is added to minimize dusting and improve incorporation of the nitrate into the charcoal. The milling operation requires ca 3 to 6 h. 

Tablet Press. The main components of a tablet compression machine (press) are the dies, which hold a measured volume of material to be compressed (granulation), the upper punches which exert pressure on the down stroke, and the lower punches which move upward after compaction to eject the tablets from the dies. Mechanical components deflver the necessary pressure. The granulation is fed from a hopper with a feed-frame on rotary-type presses and a feeding shoe on single-punch presses. A smooth and even flow ensures good weight and compression uniformity. Using the proper formulation, demixing in the hopper is minimized.

For successful tableting, a material must have suitable flow properties to allow it to be fed to the tableting machine. Wet or dry granulation is used to improve the flow properties of materials. In the case of wet granulation, agitative granulation techniques such as fluidized beds or mixer granulators as discussed above are often employed.

Tablets are made in rotary compression machines that convert powders and granules into uniform sizes. Usual maximum diameter is about 1.5 in., but special sizes up to 4 in. dia are possible. Machines operate at 100 rpm or so and make up to 10,000 tablets/min.
