Problem 7-7 (Level 1) In the hindsight of history, it was clear that the war had entered its final phase. The Confederate Army, under Robert E. Lee, and the Union Army, under Ulysses S. Grant, had fought two bloody battles in the spring of 1864, the first in the Wilderness and the second at Spotsylvania Court House. Grant broke off the battle at Spotsylvania and attempted to move around Lee s right flank. Lee anticipated the move and withdrew to a position near Hanover Junction, on the North Anna River, about 20 miles north of Richmond, Virginia. [Pg.234]

Yellowstone was designated as a national park under federal legislation because the administrative imits in which it is located, Wyoming and Montana, had not yet received statehood. President Ulysses S. Grant signed the act in 1872 and some 2 million acres were dedicated and set apart as a public park or pleasuring-groimd for the benefit and enjoyment of the people . Control of the park was placed in the hands of the Secretary of State for the Interior and thus the federal system of national parks was bom.
