Grading filtration process

For each run, asphalt sample and solvent were agitated at room temperature for over 48 hours in a flask. The filtration process was done after the agitation. Four solvents, n-pentane, n-hexane, n-heptane, and n-octane, were used in this research. All the solvents used were reagent grade and no further treatment before usage. Several commercial grades are available fine crystals of 99 to 100% purity, large crystals, pressed lumps, rods, and granular material. Double-Decomposition Methods. Double-decomposition processes all iavolve the reaction of sodium chloride, the cheapest chlorine source, with an ammonium salt. The latter may be suppHed directiy, or generated in situ by the reaction of ammonia and a supplementary iagredient. Ammonium chloride and a sodium salt are formed. The sodium salt is typically less soluble and is separated at higher temperatures ammonium chloride is recovered from the filtrate by cooling. [Pg.364]

Raw lac is first treated to remove water-soluble carbohydrates and the dye that gives lac its red color. Also removed are woody materials, insect bodies, and trash. It is further refined by either hot filtration or a solvent process. In the heat process, the dried, refined lac is filtered molten through cloth or wine screens to produce the standard grades of orange shellac. In the solvent process, lac is dissolved and refluxed in alcohol solvents, filtered to remove dirt and impurities, and concentrated by evaporation. The lac can be further decolori2ed in this process to produce very pale grades. Bleached shellac is prepared by treatment with dilute sodium hypochlorite and coalesced into slabs. [Pg.141]

Precoat Procedure Precoat filtration tests are run in exactly the same manner as bottom-feed tests except that the leaf must first be precoated with a bed of diatomaceous earth, perhte, or other shave-able inert sohds. Some trial and error is involved in selecting a grade of precoat material which will retain the filtered solids to be removed on the surface of the bed without any significant penetration.
