Grab Tensile Test

The grab tensile test uses a GTX specimen whose width is considerably greater than the width of the grips of the tensile testing machine. Under the conditions of test, it is impossible to approximate plane strain conditions hence this test method has no relevance to GTX used for soil reinforcement applications.

Grab strength test n. A method for measuring the breaking strength of a fabric sample by mounting the sample in the tensile tester so that only a part of the width of the specimen is gripped in the clamps.

For soil reinforcement, the prime role of the GTX is to provide structural integrity through its tensile behavior. Thus the load—extension characteristics of the GTX are of paramount importance to soil reinforcement apphcations. Three types of tests used to assess the tensile characteristics of GTX are the small-width tensile test (see Section 7.5.2), the grab test (see Section 7.5.1), and the wide-width tensile test (see Section 7.3.1). 

Test Methods. Fabric Tensile Strength Samples were c iditioned at 21 + 2°C and 65 + 2% relative humidity. Tensile strength was measured on an instron CRE machine according to ASTM method D-1628 (Breaking load and elongation of textiles -grab test) (9).
