As a psychiatrist, I was naturally most interested in observing the effects of BZ on thou ts, feelings and behavior. From what I had seen during my visit to Edgewood in late 1960, when Kaz Kimura and Bill Gordon were doing the testing, there seemed little doubt that I had witnessed volunteers in a state of delirium. 

None of this book could have appeared - at least as a commercial project - without the enthusiastic advice and very willing co-operation of Mr John Stone and the late Gordon Curtis of Pains-Wessex Ltd. I am also indebted to Bill Deeker of Pains Fireworks for permission to reproduce the black and white photographs, and to David Cox who gave advice on their selection and indeed took many of the pictures. 

The exposure depends on both the noise intensity and the exposure time. It is necessary to consider that pilots need to use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that plays an important role in decreasing exposure (Foltz et al. 2010). On the other hand, the losses caused by noise occur along an exposure time (Guimaraes et al. 2004). Thus, the pressure for deadhnes and intense work rhythm, common to the agricultural pilots (Barach Baruch 1970 Billings 1963 Gordon Hirsch 1986 Perry 1969 Richter et al. 1981) can increase the exposure time while decrease recovery time.
