The resistivity of the silicon is increased by making the whole detector a semiconductor p-i-n junction which is reverse biased by a potential applied to a thin film of gold on the outer faces. The silicon is doped with a small concentration of lithium, and the whole detector is cooled to liquid nitrogen temperature (77 K). The current which passes between the (gold) electrodes is now very small until an X-ray enters the detector, and the resultant current pulse can be amplified and measured. [Pg.135]

The method has been applied, for example, in electrochemical investigations (110) and also for surface catalytic reactions in the presence of a gas phase 111). When PM-IRRAS is used with a thin-layer cell, as depicted in Fig. 37, the contribution from dissolved molecules in the liquid phase can be minimized. Still, the layer thickness has to be small to prevent complete absorption of the IR radiation by the solvent. The combination of polarization modulation and ATR for metal films was demonstrated recently and applied in an investigation of self-assembled octadecylmercaptan monolayers on thin gold films 112). This combination could emerge as a valuable technique for the investigation of model catalysts. [Pg.279]

Two disparate translation methods are investigated for the measurement of sulfur dioxide. Both involve interaction with an aqueous solution. In the first, collected S(IV) is translated by the enzyme sulfite oxidase to which is then measured by an enzymatic fluorometric method. The method is susceptible to interference from i CWg) efforts to minimize this interference is discussed. The second method involves the translation of SO2 into elemental Hg by reaction with aqueous mercurous nitrate at an air/liquid interface held in the pores of hydrophobic membrane tubes. The liberated mercury is measured by a conductometric gold film sensor. Both methods exhibit detection limits of 100 pptv with response times under two minutes. Ambient air measurements for air parcels containing sub-ppbv levels of SO2 show good correlation between the two methods. [Pg.380]

Liquid crystalline azobenzene polymers can undergo photoisomerization on irradiation at 360 or 450 nm on gold films. This permits changing the refractive index of the film depending upon the wavelength used136. A study has examined the photopolymerization of p-styrene sulphonate counteranions associated with monolayers of disulphide amphiphiles as self-assembled monolayers on gold137. [Pg.374]

In the second mode, the eluting GC peaks are trapped and spectra of each component are collected offline. Cryogenic trapping of the GC eluent has become commonly available in recent years. An inert plate, often coated with a zinc selenide or a gold film, is positioned at the column outlet. This surface is cooled with either liquid nitrogen or hehum. Stepper motors move it so that the eluting GC peaks are deposited and collected on the cold surface as a series of spots. These can then be individually examined by repositioning the plate in the FTIR optical path. [Pg.1011]
