Gold s aesthetic and electrical properties make it highly desirable and widely used in a number of industrial applications. Medically, gold and gold complexes are used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, but due to its toxicity this use is declining as better treatments become available. Gold has a long half-life in the body. 

Addition of Active Methylenes In the previous decade Cinellu et al. studied certain 1,3-dicarbonyl gold complexes and some applications in organic synthesis were subsequently proposed [78]. Intermolecular addition of activated methylene compounds to alkenes was developed by using AuCl3/AgOTf [79].

As described in the introduction, the 197Au nucleus is 100% abundant and has a quadrupole moment (Table 1). Yet, in practice, the measurement of 197Au NMR spectra is not feasible. Thus, all NMR studies of gold complexes are based on the detection of other NMR-active nuclei present in the organic ligands. The literature is too extensive for a complete review here, but representative applications of 1II, l3C and 31P NMR are described in the following sections. 

The expansion in dithiolene chemistry is due to a wide variety of applications of this type of compound in fungicides, pesticides, fingerprint developers, specific analytical reagents and highly electrical conductors. There are a number of examples of 1,2-dithiolene and diselenolene gold complexes, but to our knowledge there are no examples of silver for which electrochemical data are available. 

Gold is known to exhibit strong relativistic effects [3]. Hence, its diatomics were frequently chosen as test systems of various relativistic methods also complexes and cluster compounds of gold attracted considerable interest for studies of relativistic chemistry [16,144-148]. Whereas there are quite a few applications of pseudopotential and relativistic methods to gold complexes [16, 144,149], a direct determination of relativistic effects was done less frequently. 

In this chapter, a review of our recent SFE work is provided, covering the design and application of new fluorinated macrocyclic calixarenes and the discovery of the effectiveness of linear flourinated thiourea reagents for gold complexation and extraction in unmodified SC-CO2.
