Goiter sporadic

It is nsed for hyperthyroid forms of endemic and sporadic goiters, diffnse, toxic goiters, and other illnesses accompanied by thyrotoxicity. Synonyms of this drug are ditirin, iodoglobin, and others. 

Gender In comparative studies, in patients with multinodular toxic goiter and sporadic nontoxic goiter, the incidence of goiters was higher in females than in males (Berghout et ai, 1990). Moreover, an inherited predisposition for sporadic nontoxic goiters was related to female sex (Mostbeck 1998). 

On the strength of findings reported initially in sporadic goiter (32), it has been suggested that goiter in endemic areas could be due to thyroid-growth-promoting antibodies, TGI (33-38). 

Finally, the role of antithyroglobulin antibodies in the etiology of endemic goiter has been suspected in Argentina (42) but has never been conclusively confirmed, either in endemic goiter and cretinism (43) or in sporadic congenital hypothyroidism (44). 

Innumerable experiments have established beyond doubt that simple or endemic goiter is associated with a deficient intake of iodine in the food and water, and that the use of iodized salt, or other sources of supplemental iodine, is accompanied by a marked decrease in the incidence of such goiter in the human and stock populations. Nevertheless, cases of non-toxic thyroid enlargement occur sporadically where the iodine ingestion is well above the estimated requirements. No really satisfactory... 

IC values of goiter tissue ranging below those of the normal have been reported earlier. A similar tendency is also seen in the data of LeBlanc et al. (6) and Tadros et al.(64)(sporadic goiter) and Costa et al.(11) and Hellstern et al.(28). The latter pointed out, that goiter volumes increased at a higher extent than the stored iodine, which correlated to the findings in iodine deficient rats(63). Ermans (15) reported similar results from the extremely iodine deficient area of Uele/Zaire, where... 

In a goitrous gland, iodine reserves vary in proportions to the iodine supply. If there is no marked iodine deficiency, as in sporadic goiter, the size of the exchangeable iodine in the gland is often considerably increased (5,7). In contrast, in endemic goiter, the total exchangeable iodine pool remains about within the normal... 

It has been shown that treatment with small doses of iodine can be beneficial in some cases of sporadic goiter (16) (see also Chapter VIII) An XRF measurement is essential to diagnose these cases These cases may be spared the more classical treatment with thyroid hormones which further depletes the iodine stores (Figure 3)(11) ...
