Soap. According to Pliny, the Phoenicians made the first soap about 2,500 years ago from boiled goat fat and caustic wood ash. The recipe hasn t changed much we still manufacture soap by boiling some sort of fat with a base. The most common base is sodium hydroxide, or lye, hence the term lye soap for old-fashioned caustic soaps.
