Gmelin compounds

Beilstein and Gmelin are the world s largest factual databases in chemistiy. Beil-stein contains facts and structures relating to organic chemistry, whereas Gmelin provides information on inorganic, coordination, and organomctallic compounds. 

The large databases CA, Betlstein, and Gmelin do not provide methods for directly searching spectroscopic data. Detailed retrieval of spectroscopic information is provided in databases that contain one or more types of spectra of chemical compounds. Section 5.18 gives an ovei view of the contents of larger databases including IR, NMR, and mass spectra.

The synthesis and properties of the tin-carbon bond were reviewed in reference (35). Three recent volumes of Gmelin, written by H. Schumann and I. Schumann, comprehensively cover the literature, up to the end of 1973, on tetraalkyltin compounds R Sn (36), RaSnR (37), and RtSnR, RjSnR R", and RR SnR"R " (38), and are invaluable sources of reference. 

For these three elements, for the first time in this Chapter, combinations of a nonmetal with chalcogens and halogens have to be discussed. As regards their structure and properties, most of these do not belong to the field of this review as described in the introductory Chapter. For those interested in the ternary carbon compounds that have the composition CSX2 (X = Cl, Br, I), information may be found in an issue of "Gmelin (142).

Hand in hand with the declining ecological significance of tetraorganolead compounds, the interest in such molecules is also decreasing, and comprises now mostly purely academic aspects.
