Lipoproteins. The lipid moiety of lipoproteins is quite variable both qualitatively and quantitatively. The a-lipoprotein of serum contains glyceride, phosphatide and cholesterol to about 30 -40% of the total complex. The -lipoprotein of serum contains some glyceride but the phosphatide and cholesterol account for nearly 75% of the total. [Pg.332]

Gas-Liquid Chromatography. Gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) affords both a qualitative and, if adequate internal standards are used, a quantitative analysis of the products of lipolysis. It is necessary, however, first to isolate the acids by a suitable method and then to inject them as free acids or as esters. The partial glycerides can be isolated by thin-layer chromatography and can also be determined by GLC of suitable derivatives. The acid(s) remaining in the partial glycerides can be identified readily by GLC following transesterification. Jensen and co-workers have utilized these techniques in their studies of lipase specificity (Jensen et al 1964). [Pg.236]

The case for the participation of intravascular lipolysis by lipoprotein lipase seems to be quite impressive. The quantitative importance of this process for chylomicron removal is, however, less clear. Complete resolution of individual phosphatides of animal origin may require conversion to other molecular species. For example, the characterization of phosphatidylcholine, after preliminary separation from other phosphatides, is carried out by enzymatic hydrolysis to form the diacylglycerol, which is derivatized to form the benzoate ester.
