Aminotransferases have received many names as fashions in nomenclature have changed. Two obsolete names are still used in chnical practice glutamate-oxaloacetate transaminase (abbreviated to GOT) is now aspartate aminotransferase, and glutamate-pyruvate transaminase (GPT) is now alanine aminotransferase. The new abbreviations are AST and ALT, respectively.

Clinical Biochemical Determinations of the Serum Serum lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) and glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (GPT) activities were measured on fresh, refrigerated serum within U8 h of sacrificing the animal. Lactic dehydrogenase was measured according to the method of Amador, Dorfman, and Wacker (12). Serum GPT activity was measured according to the method of Wroblewski and LaDue (13).

The equilibrium of these reactions lies almost completely on the side of lactate. However, by trapping the pyruvate in a subsequent reaction catalyzed by the enzyme glutamate-pyruvate transaminase (GPT) in the presence of L-glutamate, the equilibrium can be displaced in favour of pyruvate and NADH (eqn. 2). 

Husain et al. studied the effects of CR and CN aerosols on clinical chemistry parameters (e.g., plasma glutamic-oxaloacetic tansaminase (GOT), plasma glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (GPT), acid phosphatase, and alkaline phosphatase). Rats were exposed via inhalation to aerosols of CR or CN. Animals exposed to CR aerosol exhibited no significant changes in plasma GOT and GPT activities or in acid and alkaline phosphatase activities. In contrast, CN-exposed animals manifested significant increases in GOT, GPT, acid phosphatase, and alkaline phosphatase activities. The conclusion drawn from the study was that exposure to CN aerosol could lead to tissue damage.
