Glucosaminidase Lysozyme

It is the major secretory product and forms about 25 % of the extracellularly secreted protein of macrophages. 

In 6 from 11 patients with sarcoidosis, initial 24-h secretion of lysozyme by monocytes exceeded the normal range of values for cells from 11 age- and sex-matched control individuals (Bodel et al. 

Cells with initially augmented secretion rates continued to secrete increased amounts of lysozyme for 3 days. A correlation was noted between in vitro secretion of lysozyme by monocytes and serum levels of lysozyme in the same patient.

This enzyme [EC 3.2.1.14] (also referred to as chitodex-trinase, l,4-j8-poly-A-acetylglucosaminidase, and poly-j8-glucosaminidase) catalyzes the hydrolysis of the l,4-j8-linkages of A-acetyl-D-glucosamine polymers of chitin. It should be noted that some chitinases will also display the activity observed with lysozyme [EC 3.2.1.17]. 

Urinary lysozyme activity was also increased in workers e q)osed to an average of 23 ppm for about 9 years (Vyskocil et al. 1990). At imspecified exposure concentrations and durations, an increase in urinary fibronectin was observed in workers exposed to tetrachloroethylene (Bundschuh et al. 1993). No effects on urinary proteins (high and low molecular weight) or -acetyl-glucosaminidase (NAG) were observed. No effects on BUN or serum creatinine were observed in workers exposed at an average concentration of 20 ppm for 1-20 months (Cai et al. 1991), and occupational exposure to tetrachloroethylene at an average concentration of 14 ppm for an average of 12 years had no effects on... 

Acid phosphatase activity in 10 B5C3F1 mouse peritoneal macrophages was depressed by 22.8 and 44.7 % when ammonium metavanadate (2.5 mg and 10 mg V/kg) was given i.p. every 3 d for 6 weeks, while the activities of 3-glucuronidase, N-acetyl-P-D-glucosaminidase, and lysozyme were not significantly influenced (Vaddi and Wei 1991).
