In addition to reducing urinary and stomach infections, cranberry juice has also been shovm to have anti-adhesive activity against oral bacteria, such as S. mutans (Guo et al, 1998 Weiss et al, 2002). In the latter study, the ability of saliva-coated S. mutans to adhere to saliva- or glucan-coated hydroxyapatite in the presence of 25% cranberry juice was greatly reduced by 40-85% as compared to the control, indicating that cranberry... [Pg.137]

Caspofungin is the first of a new class termed the echinocandins. It was approved in the US and in Europe in 2001. It shows activity against infections with Aspergillus and Candida, and works by inhibiting p(, 3)-D-Glucan of the fungal cell wall. Compared to amphotericin B, caspofungin seems to have a relatively low incidence of side-effects. [Pg.424]

Glucans (Dubourdieu et al. 1981) from Botrytis cinerea have also been described in infected wines and can caused serious problems during their clarification. Botry-tized wines also contain heteropolysaccharides with higher amounts of mannose. Other glucans produced by Pediococcus can cause ropiness in wines (Ribereau-Gayon et al. 2006). [Pg.246]
