Glucagon, production

Glucagon 29 Increases blood glucose level. Fasting increases glucagon production. [Pg.58]

Hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl (HMG)-CoA reductase on the smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER) is the rate-limiting enzyme. Insulin acth"ates the enzyme (dephosphorylation), and glucagon inhibits it. Mevalonate is the product, and the statin drugs competitively inhibit the enzyme. Cholesterol represses the expression o the HMG-CoA reductase gene and also increases degradation of the enzyme. [Pg.219]

Cortical hormones include glucocorticoids (cortisol/corticosterone) and mineralocorticoids (aldosterone) medullar hormones are adrenaline and noradrenaline Pancreas Regulates glucose in blood via production of the hormones glucagon and insulin... [Pg.189]

Glucagon, a peptide of 29 amino acids, is a product of the A cells of the pancreas. It is the antagonist of insulin and, like insulin, mainly influences carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. Its effects are each opposite to those of insulin. Glucagon mainly acts via the second messenger cAMP (see p. 384). [Pg.380]

The steps of the signaling pathway also distribute the signal to several response pathways in the cell (eg, glucagon action to increase glucose production by the liver is mediated by increases in both gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis). [Pg.200]

Additional impurities, such as glucagon, somatostatin, pancreatic polypeptide and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide, are present in most conventional insulin preparations at lower levels. The presence of such contaminants can impact upon product safety and efficacy in a number of ways. [Pg.309]
