Gloves waste generation

An On-line alpha monitor has been developed for assaying Pu in trace levels in process streams. This monitor has also been qualified for uranium streams. The neutron collar for the measurement of Pu in larger concentrations has been tested in dynamic mode, and is ready for deployment. Methods have been developed for the non-destructive assay of Pu in glove box waste, and a system has been made operational for measurements on waste generated at IGC AR. An optical fibre adaption to a commercial fluoiimeter has been set up to demonstrate the... [Pg.130]

Waste sorting should be done to the extent possible at the place of waste generation. If this is not possible the incineration facility shall have a sorting area where material not suitable for incineration can be removed. Depending on the radioactivity level of the wastes and the potential for airborne contamination, the wastes may or may not be sorted by hand. Alpha bearing wastes shall be sorted in a sealed glove box. [Pg.17]

An optimum molten salt extraction process at Rocky Flats would use the minimum amount of salt required to obtain (1) a desired removal of americium, (2) a minimum transfer of plutonium to the salt, and (3) a minimum take-up of magnesium by the plutonium metal product. The product salt must be compatible with subsequent chemical processes for the recovery of americium and plutonium contained in the salt. To minimize the number of glove-box operations, time in the gloves, and operator radiation exposure, the operations must be simple and easy to conduct. By using the minimum amount of salt feed, a minimum amount of waste will be generated that ultimately must be sent to long-term storage. [Pg.67]

A variety of small-volume wastes are generated by maintenance, analytical, and monitoring activities. These primarily consist of discarded glassware, wipe cloths, gloves, plastic, trash, and paint waste, as well as other monitoring materials. Most of these materials... [Pg.32]

AU the soUd waste which is generated (pipets, tips, gloves, dishes, and so forth) must be disinfected by bleaching or autoclaving before disposal. When beginning, put a small autoclavable bag in the hood and place solid waste into it as it is generated. When finished, tape the bag shut in the hood and autoclave. [Pg.207]

When aseptic activities are undertaken as well as the preparation of medicines with highly toxic substances, commonly a lot of waste, such as overalls, gloves, hairnets, masks and mats, will be generated. The waste is usually incinerated because it may be contaminated with toxic substances. Safety is of paramount importance and should never be compromised. It is not, for example, recommended from a health and safety perspective to reuse gloves. It would furthermore create a risk of cross-contamination. Sterile clothes for aseptic work exist in a washable, so reusable, version. Washing these clothes could potentially be less harmful to the environment than incineration of synthetic overalls. [Pg.832]

Disturbance means activities that disrupt the matrix of ACM or PACM, crumble or pulverize ACM or PACM, or generate visible debris from ACM or PACM. Disturbance includes cutting away small amounts of ACM and PACM, no greater than the amount which can be contained in one standard sized glove bag or waste... [Pg.868]
