The hand-in-glove fit of a chiral substrate into a chiral receptor is relatively straightforward, but it s less obvious how a prochiral substrate can undergo a selective reaction. Take the reaction of ethanol with NAD+ catalyzed by yeast alcohol dehydrogenase. As we saw at the end of Section 9.13, the reaction occurs with exclusive removal of the pro-R hydrogen from ethanol and with addition only to the Re face of the NAD+ carbon.

What once was an industry with only a handful of selections to choose from has now exploded into a virtual grocery store of selections. Seamless knit, cut and sew, flat dipped, sewn on, reinforced, fully lined, etc. — can all be provided now in very application-specific designs or in broad, one-glove-fits-all configurations.

Hands, like many objects in the world around us, are mirror images that are not identical.

Protective cloth-lined rubber gloves fitting well above the wrist. They should be changed often to keep the inside clean and dry. Skin is also kept dry by powdering with tartaric acid talcum. 

Ensure that protective gloves (see appendix A) are free of cracks, tears, and holes and that gloves fit properly before handling chemicals.
