Glossary entries

The glossary entries for the actions are the pre- and postconditions (formal or informal) with a general natural-language description. 

Presented here is a glossary of terms related to the subject of this Concept Book. Several glossary entries are not used elsewhere in this publication. They have been included in case the user comes across an unfamiliar term in the course of managing chemical reactivity hazards. The Sources in the last column are all included in the reference list in the Reference section of this publication. Words in square brackets have been added to referenced definition. 

This Glossary amounts to small essays on topics that are central to the subject of isotopes as they appear in the cosmos. Italicised words indicate other entries to be found here. The same format within the text of the chapters also refers to Glossary entries. 

This glossary lists all the acronyms referred to in the encyclopedia together with their meanings. The major technique acronyms are listed alphabetically. Alternatives to these acronyms are listed immediately below each of these entries, if they exist. Related acronyms (variations or subsets of techniques terminology used within the technique area) are grouped together below the major acronym and indented to the right. Most, but not all, of the techniques listed here are the subject of individual articles in this volume. 

To use the volume effectively, the reader should first review the Glossary of Terms section immediately preceding the first chemical entry. This section contains precise definitions used for certain parameters where data have been obtained for each chemical. A review of these terms will help the reader interpret certain information. In addition, a list of abbreviations used throughout the volume is also provided in the front section of the handbook. 

Note - This glossary is by no means exhaustive but it hopefully contains most of the more important terms you will come across in a typical NMR environment. Some of the entries may not even have featured in the text itself. Whilst every effort has been made to make the entries scientifically valid, please note that it is sometimes difficult to condense a highly complex topic into a pithy three-line explanation, so some of the definitions are sketchy to say the least ...

Key terms This is a mini-glossary of terms in the entry that may be unfamiliar to students. 

Entries in the Encyclopedia are in alphabetic sequence. Cross-references appear in small capitals at the ends of the articles to help readers locate related discussions. Articles range from brief, but concise, definitions to extensive overviews that treat key concepts in larger contexts. A fist of common abbreviations and symbols, and a list of the known elements, as well as a modern version of the periodic table are included in the For Your Reference section at the beginning of each volume. A glossary and a comprehensive index appear at the end of each volume. Contributors are listed alphabetically, together with their academic and professional affiliations, at the beginning of each volume. 

Bold text within an entry indicates a glossary definition for that word or phrase. 

A cumulative Words to Know section in each volume. This section collects all the glossary terms used in the individual entries. 

For brief definitions of various terms associated with carcinogenesis, refer to the glossary at the end of this entry.
