Global Positioning

The Global Positioning System (GPS) includes a constellation of 24 satellites, launched and operated by the U.S. Air Force, which transmits radio signals. When used according to standardized procedures, GPS receivers can determine positional coordinates to centimeter-level accuracy, on the horizontal, anywhere on the surface of the Earth. The first GPS satellite was launched in 1978 and the system was declared fully operational for civilian applications in December, 1993. [Pg.84]

The National Geodetic Survey (NGS), part of NOAA s National Ocean Service, coordinates a network of more than 400 CORS stations which receive GPS radio signals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The GPS data collected at these stations allow GPS users to determine more accurate positions through computation after the data are collected. [Pg.84]

The field and any subportions of the field to be sampled must have specific unique labels. These labels are typically recorded in a field or laboratory notebook. The notebook will also contain their exact location using a global positioning system (GPS). The position of any samples taken in any part of the area is also recorded using its GPS location. In a similar fashion GPS, the global positioning system, uses many satellites to achieve an accurate result (see Figure 5.2). When only a few are above the horizon the position fix is perhaps to the nearest kilometre or so, but if there are eight or more satellites, positions can be fixed to a few metres. So it is clear that whether one modeller is used and several methods, or many modellers and many methods, relying on only a single attempt no matter how complex would be the most risky approach to modelling. [Pg.91]
