More objective laboratory methods employ a mechanical device such as a Terg-O-Tometer (110). Food soils are appHed to microscope sHdes or glass tape rather than to actual plates. The data of Madorsky and coworkers have been confirmed by the experiments of Holmes and Shaw, who pyrolyzed several samples of cotton fabrics, before and after treatment with a variety of flame retardants, and found a correlation between the amount of tar and the flammability of the fabric. These authors reported that the tar was highly flammable and burned vigorously when made into a coating on a strip of glass tape that simulated cotton fabrics. 

It has been shown that the flame-retardant salts alter the course of decomposition of levoglucosan, and promote the charring of this compound. Potassium dichromate depolarizer is used in an open cell, with lithium chloride-potassium chloride impregnated on glass tape. This depolarizer allows very high current density for fractions of seconds to about 5 s. 

The insulation of the coil sides is built up as continuous tape isolation, i.e., both the straight sections of the coil and the core ends are wound with tape. The insulation consists of epoxy-impregnated mica glass-tape. Both the preimpregnated MICAREX system and the vacuum-pressme impregnated MICAPACT system satisfy the requirements for temperature class F (155°C).
