An upper cylinder is attached to a direct-drive pulse-motor through a specimen holder, and a lower stationary disk is mounted in an oil cup. This sample oil cup is fixed in a cup holder suspended with a gimbal mechanism. As the drive motor is allowed to move its position toward the vertical direction, an axial load is applied by pressing the upper specimen to the lower specimen by dead weight through a rack-and-pinion jack. If a parametrization of three parameters is used, such as Eulerian angles, one has to be aware that there is no three-dimensional parametrization which is both global and non-singular. For the Eulerian angles, e.g., a singularity occurred which is equivalent to the well-known gimbal lock in a mechanical realization of these rotations. 

The Gimbal (5) mechanism is originally designed to allow the carrier to smoothly follow the table and pad regardless of their surface asperity. Whether Gimbal (5) is necessary or not has been a topic of debate for a long period. As a result, Gimbal (5) has been used so far. This is because it has more merits than demerits.
