In some parts of the world, one of the simplest tests of whether meat or fish has gone rotten is to look for the emission of light. The test for healthy flesh is to ask the question, Does it glow If the flesh does display a ghostly glow then it is luminescent, and contains biochemical organisms that are hazardous to health. 

Chondrichfhyes, or cartilaginous fish, are the most primitive and are mainly represented by the subclass Selachii, which comprises rays and skates (Elasmobran-chii) and sharks (Selachimorpha). A second subclass, Holocephali, contains only the order Chimaeriformes, represented by the monstrous chimera , Chimaera monstrosa (ghost shark) formd in the eastern Atlantic, the North Sea and the Mediterranean at depths of 50 to 500 m.
