The following portions of the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 (21 USC Sec. 812) define the five schedules for controlled substances and specify the substances included in each schedule. GHB (GAMMA HYDROXYBUTYRATE) Originally soldin health food stores as a growth hormone, a liquid nervous depressant touted for its ecstasy-like qualities. Banned by the FDA in 1990, the respiratory depression it can cause makes it among the most dangerous club drugs in circulation. 

GHB (gamma hydroxybutyrate) was originally developed as an anesthetic, but was withdrawn due to unwanted side effects. GHB holds several U.S. patents for use in the treatment of sleep disorders such as narcolepsy and insomnia, and as a muscle relaxant. GHB is used as a fast-acting anesthetic in small animals. The compounds and compositions made from GHB are useful in the treatment of Parkinson s disease, schizophrenia, and other dopamine-related disorders. 

Like other club drugs—including ecstasy (MDMA), ketamine, GHB (gamma-hydroxy butyrate), methamphetamine, and LSD (d-lysergic acid diethylamide)—Rohypnol is easily accessible and relatively inexpensive. Often, users who intentionally take the drugs to get high at rave parties or elsewhere may not even know what they have taken or been given, which can make it difficult for medical professionals to treat them if they overdose or have a reaction. 

Advertisement and easily available products have caused an increase in the problem of fraudulent products and consumer injury. Certain products such as GHB (gamma hydroxybutyrate) and GLB (gamma butyrolactone), were both sold as sleep aids or relaxers , better known as date rape drugs. Both of these products have caused death in some cases, but are still on the market as a dietary supplement. 

This class includes drugs with sedating or amnesic effects. GHB (gamma hydroxybutyric acid), the GHB precursor, 1,4-butanediol (1,4-BD), and Rohypnol or flunitrazepam are sometimes used for sexual assault or for the central nervous system (CNS) effects. Screening for a group of illicit drugs, so-called club drugs, rape drugs, or party drugs, was carried out with a dual-mode ITMS. The reduced mobility values of ketamine, GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyrate), ephedrine, flunitrazepam, methamphet-amine, MDA (3,4-methylenedioxyamphetamine), amphetamine, Amph-sulfate, and MDMA were reported, and the preferred mode of detection was noted.

GBL (Gamma-butyrolactone) and GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyric acid) are increasingly common, and linked with the club and gay scenes and steroid use in gyms. Both drugs are swallowed as colourless liquids GBL is quickly converted to GHB. They act on GABA pathways and can be fatal in overdose and withdrawal. Dependent users may dose as often as every l-2h. Be aware that overdose can switch to withdrawal within a few hours ITable 77.21.
