Some people believe motivation has the potential to answer everyone s problems. You may have heard such statements as If I were only motivated You should motivate me You should motivate him or her You are not motivated You had better get motivated or, All you have to do is find his/her hot button However, these statements, do not tell us what motivation reaUy is nor do they tell us how we can measure or even understand motivation. [Pg.47]

Various types of research are carried out on ITIESs nowadays. These studies are modeled on electrochemical techniques, theories, and systems. Studies of ion transfer across ITIESs are especially interesting and important because these are the only studies on ITIESs. Many complex ion transfers assisted by some chemical reactions have been studied, to say nothing of single ion transfers. In the world of nature, many types of ion transfer play important roles such as selective ion transfer through biological membranes. Therefore, there are quite a few studies that get ideas from those systems, while many interests from analytical applications motivate those too. Since the ion transfer at an ITIES is closely related with the fields of solvent extraction and ion-selective electrodes, these studies mainly deal with facilitated ion transfer by various kinds of ionophores. Since crown ethers as ionophores show interesting selectivity, a lot of derivatives are synthesized and their selectivities are evaluated in solvent extraction, ion-selective systems, etc. Of course electrochemical studies on ITIESs are also suitable for the systems of ion transfer facilitated by crown ethers and have thrown new light on the mechanisms of selectivity exhibited by crown ethers. [Pg.629]

What causes this animosity among scientists First and foremost, science is really hard. Most scientists put in the hours that used to be reserved for Victorian coal miners. Another assumption that we professionals sometimes make is that we should be able to help our clients get better, when the reality is that they must help themselves. We can show them the door, but ultimately it is the clients who must walk through it to better health. Long-term frustration in working with clients can lead to apathy or disillusionment, stepping stones toward what some have called professional burnout. Yet another technique has been to interview children or adults (such as teachers, Sch fer Smith, 1996) directly, either using questionnaires (Smith et al., 1992), or interviews (Boulton, 1992a). Clearly, people s answers may not be accurate in terms of what we observe, but this method should inform us about what they think and perceive. This has it s own intrinsic interest, and also interest in terms of discrepancies between beliefs and behaviour.
