Relatively close to the term "geochemical engineering" is the technique of bacterial leaching. The technique is known for a long time from the treatment of metal-poor ores, where hydro- or pyrometallurgy is no more economically feasible. During these processes - mediated by specialized bacteria - oxidation of sulphur and sulphides produces sulphuric acid, and metals are mobilized such as copper. 

Waste management in a modern society is complex and essentially involves the use of physical, chemical and biological methods to manage the disposal of solid, liquid and gas wastes. This has led to the evolution of new. terminology and concepts including the concept of geochemical engineering (Forstner 1988) ... 

The way forward for future landfill practice is the increasing use of geochemical engineering methods to ensure that the natural resources available at the landfill site are reprocessed in such a way as to reduce the risk of polluting emissions impacting on the environment.
