Knowledge of the pharmacokinetics of isoflavones in soy foods is essential for making recommendations regarding efficacy in clinical studies. Die plasma half-life of daidzein and genistein, measured from their plasma appearance and disappearance curves, is 7.9 h in adults peak concentrations occur 6-8 h after administration of the pure compounds [93] with peak concentrations ranging from 80 to 800 ng/ml (after a single oral dose of 50 mg of pure isoflavones). 

A number of foodstuffs and plant-derived products, largely from soy, are available as nonprescription items and often are touted as providing benefits similar to those from compounds with established estrogenic activity. These products may contain flavonoids such as genistein, which display estrogenic activity in laboratory tests, albeit generally much less than that of estradiol. In theory, these preparations could produce appreciable estrogenic effects, but their efficacy at relevant doses has not been established in human trials. 

Clinical trials have supported the efficacy of isoflavones such as genistein, found in soymilk and other soy products, in prevention of breast tumours and other cancers, as well as alleviating hot flushes and other symptoms associated with the menopause (Albert et al. 2002). Isoflavones are also found in liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra), alfalfa Medicago sativa), black cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa) and red clover (Trifolium pratense).
