Genetic engineering, characteristics

The Gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a usually harmless symbiont in the intestine of mammals. The structure and characteristics of this organism have been particularly well characterized. E. coli is also frequently used in genetic engineering (see p. 258). [Pg.202]

A detailed discussion of genetic engineering techniques is beyond the scope of this chapter however, genetic manipulation has been used to modify the characteristics of traditionally isolated MABs and to isolate novel binding moieties, or to combine them with new effector functions. [Pg.75]

Genetic engineering is used to achieve the same goals of agronomic and quality characteristics as traditional techniques and allows the breeder to make some modifications that would not be possible through other methods... [Pg.709]

All three of these characteristics are typical of false alarms. Therefore, the belief of the vast majority of scientists and scientific organizations that no long-term or short-term risks are likely to be associated with the process of genetic engineering is also supported by Mazurs criteria. [Pg.96]
