General Guidelines on Supporting Safety Motivation

Do provide recognition for employees that q propriately complete their observations. Such recognition is important to maintaining the observations. 

Do make recognition personal and meaningful to recipients. Steering committees and managers should plan to make the recognition meaningful. 

Do not use data from employee observations as the basis for salary evaluations or disciplinary action against employees. Managers and supervisors should use documented observations made outside of the behavioral safety process as the basis for decisions regarding salary and disciplinary actions. 

Do evaluate siq)ervisors on the percent or number of observations completed in flieir work areas. Use this as one indicator to ensure the process maintains. Be careful that supervisors do not pressure employees to participate. 

Do evaluate supervisors on the basis of management observations conducted in each work area Such observations should include discussions with employees about how the supervisors are managing the behavioral safety process.
