Gelatinized Dynamites

Most limestone quarries use either 100% ammonium nitrate [6484-52-2] (fertilizer grade) and fuel oil (ANFO), or a combination of ANFO and ammonium or gelatin dynamite, for blasting (see Explosives and propellants, explosives). After blasting, oversized boulders usually are reduced to manageable sizes by drop ball cranes. [Pg.169]

Nobel invented gelatinous dynamite in 1875 by accident. He investigated the effect of nitroglycerine on the collodion (nitrocellulose in a mixture of ether and alcohol) that he used to treat a cut finger and found that it produced a tough plastic material with adjustable viscosity and high water resistance. [Pg.274]

Polyethyleneglycol ethers. These compds are recommended as addns to gelatin Dynamite in quantities of about 0.4% to improve plasticity. They usually.contain at least 8 linear carbon atoms and at least two adjacent ethyleneoxy groups... [Pg.816]

It has been known among workers in expls industries and in mining that aged Gelatin-Dynamites ate difficult to initiate, owing to the absence of gas bubbles in their structure,... [Pg.168]

Detonation High-, Low-, and Intermediate Order, Velocities of. It has been known since the end of the last century that some liquid expls (such as NG or NGc) and some gelatinous expls (such as Gelatin Dynamites) are capable of detonating at either low (1000-2000 m/sec) or high velocity (up to 8000 m/sec), depending on method of initiation. More recently it was found that the same phenomenon can occur, under certain conditions, with crystalline secondary, or even primary, expls... [Pg.384]

I. 81 for 3000 kg of ammonia gelatin dynamite. The higher the barricade, the better it inhibits the blast force and flying fragments. The fragments of brick magazine were finer (the radius of the blast was shorter) than those of the concrete magazine... [Pg.421]

Apin s theory explains some expl phe-nomen which previously could not be understood. For example, why aged Gelatin-dynamites (See Ageing of Dynamites in Vol 1 of Encycl, pp A110 to A112) are so hard to initiate. This is because, in such expls, there are no air (or gas) spaces betw... [Pg.468]

Under the term spots may be understood small, hard particles of material, such as sand, powdered glass, carborundum, etc, incorporated in an explosive either on purpose or present as impurities. Such particles are known as grit. The term spots may also be applied to small bubbles of air or other gases entrapped in cast explosives or incorporated on purpose in other expls, such as by rolling cartridges of gelatinous Dynamites. The reason why these spots are called hot spots is explained below... [Pg.563]
