Gastrointestinal tract patient history

Adverse reactions associated with probenecid therapy include occasional rashes, allergic dermatitis, upper gastrointestinal tract irritation, and drowsiness. The drug is contraindicated in patients with a history of renal calculi. [Pg.445]

Individuals overexposed to isopropanol should be removed from exposure, affected areas of the skin should be washed with soap and water, and the eyes should be irrigated with water. Isopropanol is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Efforts to decrease absorption are unlikely to be beneficial. Severe isopropanol overdoses have been managed successfully with either peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis. Since the vast majority of patients respond completely with only supportive therapy, dialysis (hemodialysis much more effective than peritoneal) should be instituted in those patients with a history and physical exam consistent with a very large ingestion (blood isopropyl alcohol >400 mg dl ), those patients with hemodynamic instability (hypotension) and coma. [Pg.1465]

Inorganic Mercury. Ingestion of metallic mercury results in negligible absorption and little effect on the gastrointestinal tract. The two case histories identified are unusual in that the dose levels could be reasonably well quantified. The first case history reported ingestion of 15 mL (204 g) of metallic mercury by a 17-year-old male storekeeper who swallowed mercury from the pendulum of a clock (apparently out of curiosity rather than as a suicide attempt). On admission, and 24 hours later, he was symptom free, and physical examination was normal. The patient complained of no gastrointestinal symptoms, and was treated with a mild laxative and bedrest (Wright et al. 1980). [Pg.129]
