Gaseous emissions techniques

At Rockefeller University, I also had the opportunity to know Professor Prank H. Pield, director of the mass spectrometry laboratory. Earlier, Dr. Pield, in collaboration with Joe Pranklin, had developed the first ionization technique for mass spectrometry. Dr. Pield was helping Professor Tatum with the identification of chemical(s) emitted into the gas phase by a slow-growing morphological mutant of Neurospora. An exposure of this gaseous emission to the wild-type strain made it grow slowly like the mutant. This chemical, however, remained elusive to identification by mass spectrometry. [Pg.196]

Absorption is widely used as a raw material and/or product recovery technique in separation and purification of gaseous streams containing high concentrations of VOC, especially water-soluble compounds such as methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, butanol, acetone, and formaldehyde. Hydrophobic VOC can be absorbed using an amphiphilic block copolymer dissolved in water. However, as an emission control... [Pg.447]

It has been reported that the differential determination of arsenic [36-41] and also antimony [42,43] is possible by hydride generation-atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The HGA-AS is a simple and sensitive method for the determination of elements which form gaseous hydrides [35,44-47] and mg/1 levels of these elements can be determined with high precision by this method. This technique has also been applied to analyses of various samples, utilising automated methods [48-50] and combining various kinds of detection methods, such as gas chromatography [51], atomic fluorescence spectrometry [52,53], and inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry [47]. [Pg.339]

Analysis of the complex mixtures of gaseous and/or particulate POM in primary emissions or ambient air is a daunting task, given the huge numbers of species and the small concentrations. The development of the Salmonella typhimurium assay has helped to direct such analysis through the technique of bioassay-directed chemical analysis. [Pg.482]

Dr Irwin Wieder, Dr R.R. Neiman Dr A.P. Rodgers of Interphase Corporation-West, Palo Alto, Calif studied the IR and UV radiation emitted by excited species in low-pressure gaseous C2H2/O2 explosions in order to establish the population distribution in selected energy levels. In the UV they used cavity techniques, and found a relative enhancement of several electronic transitions in CH and OH radicals. In the IR the emission from excited CO2 molecules which form behind a fast detonation... [Pg.440]
